The Riga City Council has decided to transfer €100,000 to assist Ukraine in connection with the emergency situation in the energy sector.

On Monday, the Riga City Council supported the decision to provide Ukraine with financial assistance in the amount of €100,000. The funds will be channelled through the Ziedot.lv foundation to support the Ukrainian energy sector, which is in a difficult situation.

According to the LETA agency, the local government received requests for urgent assistance from the Kyiv Regional State Administration, the European Committee of the Regions and the Ukrainian Embassy in Latvia. The requests concerned the need for generators, cogeneration plants, energy storage systems and other technical equipment to stabilise the electricity supply.

Funding will be allocated from the Riga City Council's reserve fund. The aim is to provide rapid support to Ukraine in the context of the energy emergency.

Earlier, the European Commission announced the transfer of 447 emergency generators worth €3.7 million to Ukraine. This equipment is intended to restore power supply to hospitals, shelters and other critical services.

Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, the European Union has transferred more than 9,500 generators to Ukraine. In addition, the European Commission has allocated more than €1.2 billion in humanitarian aid and at least €3 billion to strengthen Ukraine's energy security.
