Russia has stepped up its attacks on facilities belonging to US companies in Ukraine, in an attempt to make the country a risky place for investors and to undermine the Ukrainian economy.

The New York Times reports this.

According to the publication, the attacks have targeted assets belonging to giants such as Cargill, Coca-Cola, Boeing, Mondelez, Philip Morris, Flex and Bunge. Since the start of 2026, the attacks have only intensified.

As the NYT notes, some Ukrainian businesspeople view these strikes as part of a broader campaign to destroy the country’s economic base, whilst others see them as an attempt to derail American investment just as Kyiv has begun to deepen its economic ties with the US.

“This strikes not only at individual companies, but also at Ukraine’s ability to attract Western business, sustain exports and build a model of post-war recovery based on private investment,” the article states.

According to media reports, the White House, despite its promise to protect US commercial interests abroad, reacted with restraint. The Trump administration did not condemn any of the attacks reported by Ukraine this year.

After US diplomats in Kyiv, Ukrainian businesspeople and officials informed the White House of the Russian attacks, the administration offered a response that amounted to “acknowledging concern”, three sources told journalists on condition of anonymity.

A State Department spokeswoman said that Washington had “called on both sides to refrain from attacks on US business interests”. A White House spokeswoman merely stated that Trump and his team were “working very hard to end the war between Russia and Ukraine”.

Russia is facing mounting pressure due to the situation on the front line, economic problems and strikes by Ukrainian drones on its territory. European officials suggest that Moscow’s increasingly aggressive rhetoric may be linked to attempts to restart the negotiation process on its own terms.
