Russian and Chinese aircraft entered South Korea's air defence zone
Nine Russian and Chinese military aircraft briefly entered South Korea's air defence identification zone over the waters north and south of the country on Tuesday. According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, this happened around 10 a.m. local time. This was reported by The Public with reference to En.yna.co.kr. Seven Russian and two Chinese aircraft, including bombers and fighter jets, entered and exited the KADIZ in turn for about an hour.
The South Korean military scrambled fighter jets to be ready for a possible threat. However, the aircraft did not violate the country's airspace and were detected before entering the zone.
The air defence identification zone is not territorial space but requires foreign aircraft to identify themselves to avoid accidental incidents. Military command representatives noted that such flights occur once or twice a year during joint Russian-Chinese exercises and always without warning.
Last November, eleven Russian and Chinese aircraft simultaneously entered the KADIZ, prompting an official protest from Seoul.
