Russian gymnasts have been allowed to compete with their flag and national anthem
This was announced by the press office of the European Gymnastics Federation.
What the European Gymnastics Federation has decided
The European Gymnastics Federation has allowed Russian and Belarusian representatives to compete in international competitions under their national flags and with their national anthems.
The organisation stated that it would comply with the resolution of the International Gymnastics Federation and lift sanctions against athletes from Russia and Belarus.
Which sports are affected by the decision
Earlier, the International Gymnastics Federation announced that the decision applies to several disciplines.
These include artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline, sports acrobatics and sports aerobics.
What led up to this
On 7 May, the International Olympic Committee recommended that sports associations lift restrictions on athletes from Belarus.
The IOC also called for them to be allowed to compete in international tournaments under their national flag.
Russian gymnasts have not competed in international competitions since 2022.
Subsequently, the federation allowed athletes from Russia and Belarus to take part in tournaments from 2024, but only under a neutral status and without the use of national symbols.
At that time, Russian gymnasts refused to participate and were unable to qualify for the Paris Olympics.
In June 2025, Russia ended its boycott and returned its athletes and judges to international competitions.
As reported by ThePublic, Belarusian athletes are returning to the pentathlon following the IOC’s recommendation.
