Sandu has responded to Putin’s decree on Transnistria
This is according to POLITICO.
Moldova speaks of attempts at destabilisation
According to Sandu, Russia continues to use the Transnistria issue to put pressure on Moldova and destabilise the situation in the region.
“They probably need more people to send to the war in Ukraine,” the Moldovan president said during a security conference in Tallinn.
She also emphasised that following the start of the full-scale invasion, many residents of Transnistria began applying for Moldovan citizenship, as they considered it safer than Russian citizenship.
Earlier, Putin signed a decree for Transnistrian residents
As previously reported by The Public, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree simplifying the procedure for obtaining Russian citizenship for residents of the unrecognised Transnistria. The document allows individuals to apply for Russian citizenship without the need to reside in Russia, prove knowledge of the Russian language, or take exams in Russian history and legislation. Transnistria remains an unrecognised separatist region of Moldova, where Russian troops have been stationed since the early 1990s. Moldova has had candidate status for accession to the European Union since 2022. Commenting on the Kremlin’s possible influence on the country’s European integration, Sandu stated that the decision on accession would be taken by the EU alone.
