The Security Service of Ukraine exposed an FSB agent banker in Kyiv who was passing on military data
The Security Service of Ukraine detained another agent of the Russian special services in Kyiv. He turned out to be a 40-year-old employee of the information security department of one of the commercial banks in the capital, recruited by the FSB.
According to SBU cyber experts, the suspect collected and transmitted to the enemy personal data of the financial institution's clients among the soldiers of the Ukrainian Defence Forces and military volunteers. The Russian side could use the information obtained to prepare terrorist attacks, information sabotage and recruitment operations against Ukrainian defenders.
Law enforcement officers exposed the agent in advance, documented his intelligence activities and detained him at his place of residence. During a search, four smartphones, removable SIM cards for conspiracy and three laptops were seized from him. These devices stored arrays of personal data of potential targets, as well as contacts with FSB representatives.
The investigation established that the bank employee came to the attention of the Russian special services due to his activity on a banned social network. After being recruited, he received test assignments from his handler in Russia to gather additional intelligence near the bases of the Defence Forces in Kyiv. To do this, the man spent his weekends walking around the area and photographing buildings that he thought could be used by the Ukrainian military.
Subsequently, the agent was instructed to collect information about bank customers from among the military and volunteers who opened accounts to help the Armed Forces of Ukraine. A separate task was to provide the occupiers with the coordinates of the backup data centre where the bank's database and its users are stored.
SBU investigators informed the detainee that he was suspected of high treason committed under martial law, under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The court chose a preventive measure in the form of detention without the right to bail. The suspect faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
Comprehensive measures were carried out under the procedural guidance of the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.
