The Security Service of Ukraine announced the arrest of a foreigner who was preparing a double terrorist attack in Kyiv
According to the Security Service of Ukraine, the suspect planned to plant a homemade explosive device under a Ukrainian military vehicle. According to the investigation, the explosion was to be detonated remotely when the soldier approached the vehicle.
Also, according to the case file, another explosive device was planned to be planted nearby, which was to be detonated after the emergency services arrived at the scene.
The SSU stated that the suspect was detained at his place of residence while preparing a homemade explosive device with mobile phones designed for remote activation.
According to the investigation, a labourer from the South Caucasus who had been living in Kyiv for a long time was involved in preparing the terrorist attack. According to law enforcement officials, he came to the attention of the Russian special services after searching for quick money on Telegram channels.
After being recruited remotely, the suspect received instructions on how to make homemade explosive devices.
According to the investigation, he ordered the components for making explosives through online sites. After synthesising the chemical components, the suspect placed them in a food container.
According to the case file, he was supposed to arrive at the location where the car was parked during the night and place one explosive device under the bonnet and another nearby.
During the searches, law enforcement officers seized a homemade explosive device, components for its manufacture, a mobile phone with data on contacts with the Russian side, as well as combat grenades.
The detainee was notified of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 14 and Part 2 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which provides for liability for preparing a terrorist act.
The issue of additional charges against the suspect for illegal handling of ammunition and manufacturing an explosive device is also being decided.
If proven guilty, he faces up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
