Anniversary of the tragedy in Odessa: 12 years of remembrance
2 May remains the most difficult date in the calendar of modern Odessa. In 2014, mass riots between supporters of federalisation and Euromaidan activists led to a fire at the Trade Union House on Kulikovo Field.
The tragedy claimed the lives of 48 people, with over 200 more injured. Traditionally, on this day, city residents lay flowers at the sites where people died in the city centre and on Kulikovo Pole. Given the state of martial law in 2026, commemorative events are held in compliance with special security requirements, and law enforcement agencies are operating on high alert to prevent provocations.
Lviv’s 770th anniversary: the jubilee of the ‘City of the Lion’
The first Saturday in May 2026 is the official City Day of Lviv. This year, the city is marking a significant date — 770 years since its foundation.
-
History of the celebration: Lviv was founded by King Danylo of Halych in the mid-13th century and named after his son Lev.
-
Format of the celebrations: Despite the anniversary, large-scale festivities, festivals and major concerts are restricted due to the threat of shelling. Instead, charity fairs are being held in support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, along with themed tours and exhibitions highlighting the resilience of Ukrainian culture.
International Harry Potter Day
For literature fans, 2 May is a celebration of ‘the boy who lived’. The date was not chosen at random: according to J.K. Rowling’s books, it was on this very day that the final battle for Hogwarts took place. Potterheads around the world are today organising film marathons and discussing the philosophical undertones of the series.
The church calendar and folk traditions
According to the new calendar, believers commemorate the holy princes Boris and Gleb. They are considered patrons of truth and protectors against illness.
-
A ritual for wealth: It is believed that if, before sunrise on 2 May, you count all the money in your home, it will bring financial stability. It is important to donate part of these funds to charity to ‘set in motion’ a cycle of prosperity.
-
Signs for the harvest: If a nightingale sings today, expect a good harvest and a warm spring; if the acacia has blossomed, summer will come early.
What not to do on 2 May
-
Be envious: this is considered a great sin that may bring misfortune upon the envious person.
-
Go out with empty pockets: an old superstition advises always carrying a banknote or coin so that your wallet is never empty.
-
Refuse to help: the day favours generosity, so any display of stinginess may backfire on you.
