Ukraine’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Andriy Sibiga, held a meeting with Japan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ayano Kunimitsu. The diplomats discussed the situation on the front line, military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, support for Ukraine and the involvement of Japanese businesses in the reconstruction effort.

This was reported by the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Andriy Sibiga and Kunimitsu Ayano discussed the security situation, recent developments on the front line and international efforts to achieve a just peace.

Military cooperation between Russia and North Korea was a separate topic of discussion. Sybiga emphasised that the security of Europe and the Indo-Pacific region is indivisible.

According to the minister, the combat experience and technology that Russia and North Korea are gaining in the war against Ukraine will have consequences far beyond Europe.

Ukraine’s position

Sibiga thanked Japan for its consistent support for Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

He noted that this support sends an important signal to Ukraine in its defence of freedom, sovereignty, territorial integrity and the principles of international law.

Ayano Kunimitsu reaffirmed Japan’s unwavering support for Ukraine.

“Japan will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine. We hold the courage of the Ukrainian people in high regard and remain committed to supporting efforts aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace,” she said.

During the meeting, the parties also discussed Ukraine’s preparations for winter, the Conference on Ukraine’s Recovery in Gdańsk, and Russian attacks on Ukrainian cultural heritage.

Separate discussions focused on involving Japanese businesses in Ukraine’s reconstruction, the development of innovation, and cooperation in the fields of drone technology and artificial intelligence.

What assistance can Japan provide?

Ayano confirmed Japan’s readiness to continue assisting Ukraine in the restoration of its energy system.

This is crucial for Ukraine ahead of the new heating season, as energy infrastructure remains one of the main targets of Russian attacks.

Japan is one of Ukraine’s key partners in Asia. Tokyo provides Ukraine with financial, humanitarian and reconstruction aid, and also supports international efforts to hold Russia to account for its aggression.

The issue of cooperation between Russia and North Korea has in recent years become one of the key security challenges for Ukraine and its partners, as North Korea supplies Russia with weapons and ammunition for the war against Ukraine.
