Syrian army claims full control over Aleppo after liberation of last district
The Syrian army has announced that it has taken full control of the city of Aleppo after liberating the last district, which Damascus claimed was under the control of the YPG group. This was stated in an official statement by the Syrian Armed Forces Command on 10 January, Trthaber.
The military said that the combat units have completed the operation to establish control over all neighbourhoods of the city. At the same time, residents were urged to temporarily stay in their homes and not go out on the streets due to the risk that some militants could be hiding among the civilian population. In case of emergencies, people were advised to contact the units located in the respective areas
According to the Syrian side, about 200 civilians were evacuated from the Sheikh Maksoud area, who were held as human shields. The evacuation was carried out after the security forces were able to pinpoint the exact location of the people and conduct the operation without any casualties. The civilians were then safely transported out of the city
Syrian state television El Iḫbāriyya, citing a military source, reported that after the evacuation was completed, YPG units attempted to strike Aleppo with drones launched from the area of Deir Hafir in the east of the province. The Syrian air defence intervened and managed to intercept the drones, preventing them from hitting residential areas. One of the destroyed drones was captured on live television
The situation in Aleppo remains tense, but official Damascus says that control over the city has been fully restored, and the main task for the near future is to ensure the safety of the civilian population and stabilise the situation
