The US is attempting to resume dialogue with Iran via Qatar
This is according to Axios.
Talks in Miami
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and White House Special Envoy Steve Witkoff took part in the meeting.
According to Axios sources, the Qatari Prime Minister changed his schedule following a visit to Washington, where he had previously held talks with US Vice President J.D. Vance. Instead of returning to Doha, he travelled to Florida for urgent consultations with the American side.
US officials, the publication notes, consider Qatar to be a “particularly effective” mediator in contacts with the Iranian leadership.
What the US and mediators are discussing
According to Axios, the negotiations centre on a one-page memorandum intended to cement a cessation of hostilities and lay the groundwork for further talks on more complex issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme. During his stay in Miami, the Qatari Prime Minister also held a telephone conversation with the Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister to coordinate mediation efforts.
Iran has not yet responded
Following consultations, the US is still awaiting an official response from Iran regarding the proposed memorandum. Earlier, Marco Rubio stated that Washington hoped to receive a response from Tehran “within a few hours”, but as of the evening of 9 May, no response had been received.
Who else is involved in the talks
In addition to Qatar and Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey and Saudi Arabia are involved in the diplomatic consultations. The article also notes that the son of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not appeared in public for some time following an injury, continues to influence the country’s military strategy, according to US intelligence assessments.
