US sets condition for participation in European meeting on Ukraine
The White House has said that the Donald Trump administration is considering sending a representative to the Ukraine talks in Europe this week. However, US participation will depend on whether there is a realistic prospect of signing a peace agreement. This was announced at a briefing by White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt.
According to her, the US continues to work actively to end the Russian-Ukrainian war. The day before, Trump held phone consultations with the leaders of France, Germany and the UK, and his special envoy Steve Witkoff continues to hold talks with Kyiv, Moscow and European partners. Levitt clarified that if the meeting in Paris gives a chance for a real breakthrough, Washington will join in, but there is no certainty that a quick peace is possible.
The spokeswoman also said that the US team had held more than 30 hours of talks with all parties in recent weeks. At the same time, she stressed that Trump is disappointed with both Russia's position and Ukraine's actions. The president, she said, is «tired of meetings for the sake of meetings» and expects a transition from talks to concrete steps.
The US approach demonstrates the growing pressure on the negotiators and the administration's desire to get a tangible result in the coming weeks.
