The European Commission promises to finalise the 21st package of sanctions against Russia: what is the deadline?
This was announced by the European Commission’s chief spokesperson, Paula Pinho, on Monday, 8 June.
The new, 21st package of EU sanctions against Russia will be ready as early as this week, the European Commission has announced.
The European Commission will submit the final proposal on the content of the 21st package of EU sanctions against Russia to the Council of the EU for approval.
“Yes, the 21st package of sanctions against Russia will be ready this week,” Pignot said.
On 2 June, European Truth, citing sources, reported that the 21st package of EU sanctions against Russia is planned to be approved by 15 July to prevent a sharp rise in the price cap on Russian oil.
Earlier, Politico reported that sanctions against high-ranking members of the Russian Orthodox Church, in particular its head and close ally of Russian dictator Putin, Patriarch Kirill, could be extended. These restrictions had previously been blocked by the government of Viktor Orbán, now the former Prime Minister of Hungary.
On 31 May, Bloomberg reported that the 21st package of EU sanctions against Russia could include restrictions on approximately 20 additional tankers in the shadow fleet, which Russia uses to transport its oil.
As a reminder, EU ambassadors approved the 20th package of sanctions against Russia on 22 April. It is currently the largest package in two years and includes economic restrictions targeting key sectors underpinning Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
