Traffic offences
The government has announced a package of measures designed to reduce the number of road accidents and improve driver discipline. Stricter penalties are planned for drivers who regularly flout the rules of the road, particularly those who exceed the speed limit.

This was announced by the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Yulia Svyrydenko, following a meeting with the Minister of the Interior, Ihor Klymenko.

Among other things, the government proposes to improve the systems for automatic and non-automatic recording of offences and to regulate the use of personal electric transport by law.

Svyrydenko added that the final decisions must take public proposals into account.

This is how the government responded to the road traffic accident in the Solomyanskyi district of Kyiv on 5 June, in which four people were killed, including a child and two police officers. Three more people were injured.

It transpired that the driver of the Mercedes had committed 39 traffic offences, 18 of them in the past year. Most of the offences involved speeding, which carries a fine of 340 UAH. On 8 June, it was reported that the driver who caused the horrific road accident worked as a taxi driver and was on a fare at the time of the crash. The driver has already been remanded in custody for 60 days without the right to bail — he faces up to 10 years in prison.
