The SSU has detained a Russian agent who was coordinating the attack on Kyiv on 24 May
The SSU’s counter-intelligence unit has detained a Russian agent who, according to the investigation, directed an air strike on Kyiv on the night of 24 May.
The suspect was detained the day after the capital was shelled. According to the SSU, he was conducting reconnaissance near one of the Ministry of Defence’s facilities and gathering data on the consequences of the enemy strikes.
The investigation established that the detainee is an 18-year-old resident of Kyiv. According to law enforcement, Russian special services recruited him after he had been looking for a quick way to make money on Telegram channels.
After being recruited, the young man travelled to the outskirts of Kyiv and marked on Google Maps the transport routes used to move military equipment belonging to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The SSU noted that this was a test assignment.
Subsequently, the agent was instructed to record the aftermath of a combined attack on Kyiv and pass the information to the Russian side. He planned to send the collected data in real time to a handler in Russia to prepare new strikes and adjust follow-up attacks.
SSU officers documented how the suspect arrived at one of the Ministry of Defence’s facilities to check its condition following a night-time strike.
During his arrest, a smartphone was seized from him containing prepared intelligence reports and a detailed description of the consequences of the shelling.
Investigators informed the detainee that he was suspected of an offence under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — treason committed under martial law.
The court ordered his detention as a preventive measure. The suspect faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The comprehensive operation was carried out by officers of the SSU Main Directorate in Kyiv and the Kyiv region under the procedural guidance of the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office.
