The Office of the Prosecutor General has confirmed that criminal proceedings have been opened following allegations concerning Yulia Mendel, the former press secretary to the President of Ukraine. The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by the Main Investigation Department of the Security Service of Ukraine

This has come to light from documents from the Office of the Prosecutor General, which were made public by human rights activist Eduard Bagirov.

The Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the opening of proceedings

Eduard Bagirov reported that on 12 May he had lodged a complaint with the SBU regarding Yulia Mendel’s statements. He subsequently published a letter from the Office of the Prosecutor General confirming the registration of criminal proceedings. According to the document, on 13 May a pre-trial investigation was launched on the grounds of criminal offences under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (treason) and Part 2 of Article 436-2 of the Criminal Code (justifying, recognising as lawful or denying the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine). The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by the SBU’s Main Investigation Directorate. Bagirov also stated that he had lodged a complaint with the Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv regarding the SBU’s inaction, specifically for failing to provide an extract from the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations following the submission of his application.

The proceedings are linked to an interview with Tucker Carlson

According to Bagirov, the reason for approaching the law enforcement agencies was Yulia Mendel’s interview with the American journalist Tucker Carlson.

Earlier, The Public reported that during the conversation, Mendel described the daily commemoration of the dead at 9:00 am as a “strange rule”. She also claimed that Ukrainian drivers were supposedly required to stop their cars on the roads to listen to the national anthem. In fact, a nationwide minute’s silence is held in Ukraine every day at 9:00 am in honour of the military and civilians who have died as a result of Russian aggression. It does not require the national anthem to be played. At the time of publication, Yulia Mendel had not publicly commented on the information regarding the opening of criminal proceedings.
