The UIPM has lifted sanctions against Russian pentathletes following the IOC’s decision
This was reported by Radio Free Europe, citing a statement by Degtyarev.
Mikhail Degtyarev stated that the International Modern Pentathlon Union had lifted all sanctions against Russian athletes.
According to him, this is a continuation of the process of Russia’s return to international sport following the decision by the International Olympic Committee.
“Yesterday, the Volleyball Federation reinstated our teams for international competitions. Today, the International Modern Pentathlon Union has lifted all sanctions against Russian athletes, and this process will continue,” said Degtyarev.
On 7 July, the International Olympic Committee temporarily lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee. The IOC also stated that its previous recommendations to international federations regarding the participation of Russian athletes were no longer applicable.
However, this does not mean the automatic return of all Russian athletes to every sport. The final decisions rest with the international federations, which themselves determine the rules for admission to their competitions.
Following the IOC’s decision, the International Volleyball Federation has already reinstated Russian teams in the world rankings. According to the AP, the football organisations FIFA and UEFA have not yet lifted their restrictions on Russian teams.
What the decision means for modern pentathlon
If the UIPM’s decision is implemented in full, Russian modern pentathletes will be able to return to international competition without the federation’s previous sanctions.
Modern pentathlon is an Olympic sport. Therefore, the international federation’s decision is significant not only for individual tournaments but also for Russian athletes’ potential path to the Olympic Games.
Previously, Russian and Belarusian athletes in many sports could only compete under neutral status if they met additional eligibility criteria.
The decision to gradually allow Russian athletes back into international sport comes against the backdrop of the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine. It was following the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022 that most international sporting organisations imposed restrictions on Russian and Belarusian athletes.
Ukraine has repeatedly opposed the return of Russian representatives to international competitions, in particular because of Russia’s use of sport as a tool of state propaganda and the support for the war expressed by some athletes.
Following the IOC’s decision, some federations began to ease the restrictions, but not all sporting organisations have supported this approach. For example, World Athletics is maintaining the ban on Russian track and field athletes, and the Russian side is already appealing this decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Following Degtyarev’s statement, it is expected that the UIPM will set out the practical arrangements for the return of Russian athletes to competition.
Key issues remain the format of participation, the possibility of using national symbols, the conditions for admission to specific tournaments, and the stance of competition organisers.
The decision in modern pentathlon could serve as another signal to other international federations, though there is currently no automatic reinstatement of Russia across all sports.
