Three kilograms of gold bars were seized from a Ukrainian citizen at the border with Poland
Staff at the Podkarpackie Regional Office of the Polish National Tax Administration uncovered an attempt to illegally import three gold bars into the country, weighing a total of three kilograms and worth around 1.5 million zlotys.
The incident took place at the ‘Kroscienko-Smilnica’ border crossing on the Polish-Ukrainian border. During a check on a 46-year-old Ukrainian woman driving a car, a scanner was used to detect three gold bars, each weighing one kilogram, concealed under her clothing.
The gold was seized for further proceedings, which are being conducted by the Podkarpackie Customs and Tax Office in Przemyśl. To ensure potential penalties can be enforced, law enforcement officers also confiscated 23,400 euros from the Ukrainian citizen.
The Polish National Tax Administration has reminded the public that persons entering or leaving the European Union are obliged to declare the transport of funds and other valuables, if their total value is equal to or exceeds the equivalent of 10,000 euros. This requirement applies not only to cash, but also to cheques, bills of exchange, money transfers and gold in the form of ingots.
According to the Polish authorities, the Ukrainian citizen may face penalties for breaching Polish customs legislation.
