Trump announces preparation of US ground operations against drug cartels in Mexico
President Donald Trump has announced ground operations by the United States against drug cartels in Mexico. He made the announcement in an interview with Fox News, commenting on the fight against drug trafficking.
According to the head of the White House, the United States has already stopped about 97 per cent of drugs that entered the country by sea and is now planning active actions on land. Trump stated that drug cartels are actually controlling Mexico, calling the situation in this country extremely alarming.
The American president also claims that drug cartels' activities lead to the deaths of 250 to 300 thousand people in the United States every year. He did not specify how exactly the ground operations are planned to be implemented and whether such actions have been agreed with the Mexican authorities.
In addition, Trump praised the actions of the US military involved in recent operations in Venezuela. In particular, he called the work of the Special Forces who took part in the raid on Nicolas Maduro and his wife "fantastic". According to Trump, the operation was carried out in a well-fortified area and without any losses for the US side.
As reported earlier, explosions occurred in Caracas on 3 January, and part of the city was left without electricity. The Venezuelan authorities claimed the deaths and injuries as a result of the US air strikes, while Washington spoke of a «large-scale strike» and the detention of the country's leadership.
