Trump claimed that by going to war with Iran, he had prevented the outbreak of World War III
“A nuclear war would have broken out, which would have escalated into a Third World War. And more importantly, it would have been a war after which there would simply be nothing left,” Trump said whilst speaking to journalists.
Prior to this, the US President had stated that he had decided to strike Iran to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons, and to completely destroy the country’s missile industry and its navy.
At the same time, according to Axios sources, Trump had counted on a swift and clear victory. According to White House forecasts, the war was not expected to last longer than four to six weeks, but the administration is now preparing for a more protracted conflict.
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff stated after the start of the military operation that during the negotiations preceding the strikes, the Iranian side claimed to possess sufficient quantities of enriched uranium to produce 11 nuclear bombs. According to him, Iranian negotiators told the American side of their ‘inalienable right’ to enrich nuclear fuel.
