Trump cut short the interview following a row with an NBC News journalist
US President Donald Trump cut short his interview on NBC News’s ‘Meet the Press’ following a disagreement with presenter Kristen Welker.
During the conversation, the two discussed the situation regarding Iran, the US economy, the California elections and other issues of US domestic and foreign policy.
Tensions between Trump and the journalist arose towards the end of the interview when Welker asked a series of questions regarding his claims that the 2020 presidential election had been rigged. The presenter emphasised that no evidence had been presented to support such claims.
In response, Trump claimed that the election had been “rigged” and accused the media of biased reporting. During the discussion, he called NBC News a “biased” and “dishonest” network, and also claimed that the American press was acting unfairly.
After another exchange, the president said: “Let’s wrap this up, I’ve had enough,” before removing the microphone and ending the conversation.
Kristen Welker urged him to continue the interview, reminding him that the NBC News team had travelled to Wisconsin specifically to record it. In response, Trump stated that he had spent about an hour with the journalist and believed he had devoted enough time to the conversation.
Up to that point, much of the interview had focused on the conflict surrounding Iran. Trump stated that the US was close to reaching an agreement with Tehran, but emphasised that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons. According to him, if an agreement cannot be reached, Washington may resort to military action.
The President also stated that he does not support lifting sanctions on Iran until the terms of a possible agreement are met, and expressed his conviction that the situation can be resolved either through diplomacy or by force.
