About 50,000 households lost power in Berlin due to suspected arson
In the south-western part of Berlin, about 50,000 households and more than 2,000 businesses were left without electricity. The outage affected the districts of Nikolaussee, Zellendorf, Wansee and Lichterfelde. It is reported by The Public with reference to DW.
The accident was caused by a fire on a cable bridge over the Teltow Canal, which damaged several lines leading to the Lichterfelde power plant. The fire was extinguished, and the police are investigating a version of deliberate arson
The grid operator said that due to the large-scale damage to the cables, repairs would take several days. Full restoration of power supply is expected by Thursday, 8 January. The work is complicated by low temperatures and snow
Residents have been warned about possible interruptions in heating and communication. Traffic lights and some shops in the de-energised areas are out of order. The incident took place amid winter weather with temperatures around zero and occasional snowfall.
