Disputes continue in the Czech Republic over the possible transfer of L-159 aircraft to Ukraine
The three-party ruling coalition of the Czech Republic is discussing the possibility of transferring L-159 fighter jets to Ukraine during a meeting in Prague ahead of a government session. This issue has sparked internal debate, as some coalition politicians do not support either the transfer or the sale of these aircraft to Kyiv.
In particular, Tomio Okamura, leader of the Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) party and speaker of the lower house of parliament, told reporters that he opposes such a decision. According to him, L-159 aircraft have a low residual value compared to their purchase price, but at the same time retain high combat effectiveness. The politician stressed that if they are transferred, the Czech Republic will eventually have to buy similar aircraft at a significantly higher price, as these machines are needed to implement plans to strengthen air defence. He also noted that the L-159s are currently on combat duty.
Okamura added that Czech Defence Minister Jaromír Zuna, who also represents the SPD, shares this position. At the same time, the speaker acknowledged that Czech President Petr Pavel had discussed the issue of the aircraft with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, given the position of the current government, which does not want to allocate additional budget funds to help Ukraine. According to Okamura, information about the possible transfer of aircraft was not supposed to be made public, but it was leaked to the media and, in his opinion, was partially distorted by the Ukrainian media, after which it was picked up by the Czech media.
In turn, Czech President Petr Pavel said that the topic of L-159 aircraft has been discussed for about six months and initially it was about the transfer. According to him, this time President Volodymyr Zelensky, taking into account the needs of the Ukrainian side, proposed the option of purchasing the aircraft. Pavel, a former NATO general, believes that the sale of four of the 24 aircraft available to the Czech army is acceptable in terms of risk and could significantly speed up the decision-making process.
