A key power line has gone down in Moldova following attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure
According to Moldelectrica, the power cut occurred on the evening of 23 March after 7 pm. The National Crisis Management Centre stated that there is a risk of damage to the Isaccea–Vulcănești line as a result of shelling targeting critical infrastructure in Ukraine. This was reported by The Public, citing Newsmaker.
The Moldovan Ministry of Energy confirmed the outage. They noted that work to identify faults and carry out repairs is ongoing, and details will be provided once inspections are complete. At the time of reporting, repair crews had not yet arrived at the site.
Later, the ministry clarified that the line remains disconnected due to attacks on energy infrastructure in southern Ukraine. Teams from three transmission system operators are coordinating technical inspections. According to their estimates, field work could take several hours.
As of the evening, Moldova continued to receive electricity, in particular through imports from Ukraine. Total consumption stood at around 620 megawatts, of which approximately 320 megawatts were supplied by domestic generation, with a further 300 megawatts coming from Ukraine.
There is currently no information regarding large-scale power cuts in Moldova.
The Isaccea-Vulcanesti line is the main channel for electricity imports from Romania to Moldova.
Earlier, at the end of January, the disconnection of this line led to a partial blackout in the country. At that time, most settlements were left without power due to problems in Ukraine’s power grids.
On the night of 24 March, according to Ukrainian media reports, Odessa was attacked by drones, and power cuts were reported in parts of the city.
