A strike on a Russian submarine in Novorossiysk: Navy reveals details of complex operation
The Ukrainian Defence Forces' operation to destroy a Russian submarine in the port of Novorossiysk was complex and carefully planned. This is the second Russian submarine destroyed by Ukrainian forces since the beginning of the full-scale war, said Ukrainian Navy spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk.
According to him, Russia had six submarines in the Black Sea, four of which are cruise missile carriers. After two successful strikes, two more such boats and one submarine without missile weapons remain in service.
Pletenchuk reminded that the first submarine Rostov-on-Don was hit by Ukraine in 2024. This was the first confirmed case of a submarine being destroyed in combat after the Second World War.
The latest strike was on a 636.3-class Warsawianka project boat. The base in Novorossiysk is considered to be well protected, so Russia has rarely withdrawn its ships from there recently due to the threat of attacks. The situation is further complicated by the navigation period, as from mid-autumn to mid-spring, the number of such vessels at sea is limited.
The navy spokesman stressed that the operation included several levels of preparation, from creating weapons of destruction to planning and preventing information leakage. It was the sense of security in the port that proved fatal for the enemy.
