Journalist’s Day in Ukraine
Every year on 6 June, Ukraine celebrates the professional holiday of media workers – Journalist Day. The date is linked to an important event in Ukrainian journalism: on 6 June 1992, the Union of Journalists of Ukraine was admitted to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). Two years later, the holiday was officially established by a decree of the President of Ukraine. Journalist Day is an opportunity to recognise the work of reporters, editors, photographers, cameramen and other media professionals.During a full-scale war, the work of journalists has taken on particular significance, as it is the media who document events, work with facts and report on the situation in Ukraine.
What is the church holiday on 6 June
According to the New Julian calendar, Orthodox Christians honour Saint Vissarion of Egypt on this day, who is known as a miracle-worker. People turn to the saint with prayers for help in difficult situations, for strength of spirit, and for support in family matters. Vissarion is also considered the patron saint of those involved in creative work and crafts. According to the old church calendar, 6 June commemorates the Venerable Simeon the Stylite.
World Transplant Day
World Transplant Day is also observed on 6 June. This day is dedicated to donors, medical professionals and specialists working in the field of organ transplantation. Its aim is to draw attention to the importance of organ donation and the problems associated with the shortage of organs for transplantation.
Folk traditions on 6 June
In the past, people used to pay close attention to nature and the weather on this day. One of the main signs was the flowering of the rowan tree: if the tree had already blossomed, a good grain harvest was expected.
There were also the following signs:
- crickets chirping loudly – hot weather ahead;
- birds singing at night foretells a warm and sunny day;
- an easterly wind may bring heavy rain;
- a sudden drop in temperature was considered a sign of a cool June.
According to folk traditions, 6 June was considered a favourable day for working in the vegetable garden: loosening the soil, tending to the potatoes, weeding and picking strawberries. At the same time, folk beliefs advised avoiding arguments and complaining about difficulties. It was believed that conflicts on this day could damage relationships for a long time.
