The European Boxing Union (EBU) has decided not to lift restrictions on Russian and Belarusian professional boxing. The decision was unanimously supported by the organisation’s board members during a meeting in Albania

This was announced by Alina Shaternikova, Vice-President of the Ukrainian National Professional Boxing League and Ukraine’s representative to the EBU

The EBU has maintained restrictions on Russians and Belarusians

According to Shaternikova, the decision was taken during a meeting of the European Boxing Union’s Executive Committee, which is taking place as part of the EBU’s annual assembly in Tirana. She noted that all board members voted unanimously to maintain the current position on sanctions against representatives of Russian and Belarusian professional boxing.

“The sanctions remain in force,” Shaternikova wrote.

The Ukrainian representative thanked EBU President Peter Stucki, the organisation’s Secretary General Enza Jakoponi, and the board members for their support of Ukrainian boxing and their consistent stance in condemning Russian aggression.

The EBU’s stance on Russia and Belarus

Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, international sports organisations began imposing restrictions on representatives of the Russian Federation and Belarus. At the same time, the issue of Russian and Belarusian athletes returning to international competitions remains a subject of debate in the global sporting community. The European Boxing Union has currently decided not to review its position on professional boxing in these countries.
