Ukraine called on the UN to adopt a resolution on a ceasefire, whilst Lavrov stated that Russia would refuse to halt hostilities
During a meeting of the UN Security Council, Volodymyr Pavlichenko, Ukraine’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, stated that Security Council members should without delay submit a draft resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire for consideration. This was reported by ThePublic, citing Ukrinform.
According to him, the UN Security Council’s paralysis on the issue of Russia’s crimes must be brought to an end by the international community, which supports a rules-based international order. He noted that the adoption of such a resolution would be a clear affirmation of support for the restoration of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
Pavlichenko also called on partners to continue providing military support to Ukraine, emphasising that this is an effective strategy for restoring peace and saving lives.
On the same day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, during a joint press conference with Mozambican Foreign Minister Maria Lukash, stated that Russia would not agree to a ceasefire along the current front line and would continue hostilities until it had achieved the objectives which, he said, had been set by Vladimir Putin in June 2024.
In June 2024, Vladimir Putin stated that Russia was ready to begin negotiations on condition that Ukrainian troops were fully withdrawn from the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions. Among other conditions, he also cited Ukraine’s renunciation of NATO membership.
On 9 July, Reuters, citing three sources, reported that Vladimir Putin was rejecting calls for peace talks with Ukraine and might escalate the war in the coming months. The Financial Times, citing its own sources, also reported that the Kremlin leader is unlikely to begin constructive peace talks with Ukraine until at least February 2027.
