Ukraine is set to receive 16 Gripen fighter jets from Sweden
This was announced by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
On 30 June, Ukraine and Sweden took another step towards strengthening Ukraine’s combat aviation. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the two sides have signed an agreement providing for the transfer of 16 Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine.
In line with previous agreements with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, the Ukrainian Air Force will receive the first 16 Gripen C/D aircraft in early 2027.
Along with the fighter jets, Ukraine will receive a package of essential equipment, technical assistance and the support required to operate the aircraft.
On 30 June, Volodymyr Zelenskyy also held a meeting with Swedish Defence Minister Paul Jonsson. The parties discussed the implementation of agreements on aviation, preparations for the Drone Deal, and further cooperation in the field of missile defence.
“I would like to thank Sweden – its entire population and government – for their meaningful partnership and constant support since the very beginning of the Russian invasion. Together, we are working for the security of Ukraine and the whole of Europe,” the President said.
For Ukraine, this agreement means a further strengthening of its air force’s combat capabilities and an expansion of military-technical cooperation with Sweden. The transfer of aircraft will be accompanied by training, technical support and the necessary equipment.
As a reminder, on 18 June, Ukraine and Germany also signed a defence agreement on cooperation in the field of defence against Russian ballistic missiles. It provides for the exchange of relevant technologies.
