Ukraine condemns the assassination attempt in Washington: a statement by Andriy Sybiga
This was reported on the official X (Twitter) page of Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiga
Statement by the Foreign Minister
Andriy Sybiga expressed relief that no senior officials were injured as a result of the attack. US President Donald Trump, Vice-President J.D. Vance and others present are safe. The Minister emphasised that such acts of violence are inexcusable.
Social media reaction: calls for peace and accusations
The minister’s post sparked a mixed reaction (see screenshots in the gallery). Some users expressed solidarity with Ukraine’s position, leaving comments such as ‘No to violence’ and prayer emojis. At the same time, provocateurs have become active under the post, attempting to link the incident to Ukraine without justification or spreading anti-Semitic cartoons and conspiracy theories in an attempt to downplay the seriousness of the attack.
Earlier, ThePublic reported that an armed man opened fire with a shotgun at the security checkpoint of the Washington Hilton hotel, wounding a Secret Service agent. Donald Trump, who was immediately evacuated from the ballroom with Melania Trump, along with 2,600 guests, described the attacker as a ‘sick man’ and thanked the security staff for their bravery. The incident took place at the very same hotel where Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981. The official dinner has now been cancelled, and the investigation is ongoing.
