Ukraine tops global arms imports — SIPRI data
This is according to a new report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
According to research by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Ukraine became the world's largest importer of major weapons in the period 2021–2025.
Ukraine's share of global arms imports during this period was 9.7%, while in the previous five-year period (2016–2020) it was only 0.1%.
After Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, at least 36 countries supplied Ukraine with various types of weapons.
The largest suppliers were:
-
the United States — 41% of all supplies
-
Germany — 14%
-
Poland — 9.4%
In 2025, supplies to Ukraine decreased slightly due to a reduction in military aid from the United States. At the same time, many European countries, as well as Australia and Canada, continued to supply significant amounts of weapons and promised to continue supporting Ukraine.
Overall, in 2021–2025, Europe became the region with the largest arms imports in the world, accounting for 33% of the global volume. Ukraine topped the list of arms recipients both in the region and worldwide.
Among the main types of weapons received by Ukraine are modern combat aircraft, air defence systems, guided missiles and other heavy weapons.
Previous studies also noted that Ukraine was already recognised as the world's largest importer of major types of weapons in the period 2020–2024. At that time, imports increased almost 100-fold compared to 2015–2019.
