Ukrainian experts are working with five Middle Eastern countries to counter suicide bombers, and there have been further requests from other countries, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said following a briefing by National Security and Defence Council Secretary Rustem Umerov.

The President of Ukraine wrote about this on Telegram.

“Our teams are already working with five countries to counter ‘suicide bombers’ – expert assessments have been provided, and we are helping to build a defence system. There are additional requests from other countries. There are also requests from the US regarding two areas in the region for expert support for their military. We are processing requests from European partners whose forces are based in this region,” the message reads.

He noted that Ukraine is keen to see the swiftest and most reliable stabilisation around Iran, as this is of global significance in terms of the state of the oil and gas markets, and consequently the price situation, particularly in Europe and Ukraine.

“Our fundamental position is that any success of terrorist activity by the Iranian regime, which is a long-standing ally of Russia, is unacceptable. Nowhere in the world should terrorists be allowed to determine the fate of people and nations,” the President emphasised.

Rustem Umerov reported that over the past week he had visited the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Jordan for meetings with state leaders and relevant agencies.

The work focuses on two areas:

  • the application of Ukrainian technologies to counter air threats, in particular drone attacks;
  • consultations with partners on assessing the security situation and developing practical solutions for air defence, drawing on Ukrainian experience.
  • Ukrainian teams have already conducted an expert assessment of critical infrastructure protection and ‘developed specific solutions’. They are also providing recommendations on improving the effectiveness of individual air defence systems.

“Interception units have been deployed to protect civilian and critical infrastructure. We are also working on expanding coverage areas. We have separately identified further steps for developing long-term security cooperation with each of these countries. Ukraine stands guard over life and sovereignty alongside those who support us in preserving our independence,” said Umerov.
