Ukraine in 2025 received billions of euros from frozen Russian assets
This is reported by Welt am Sonntag.
According to the publication, in March, May, June, and July, the Ukrainian government received 1 billion euros from profits from frozen assets, in January - 3 billion euros, and in April - 3.1 billion euros.
It is reported that Brussels uses these funds to support military and civilian projects in Kyiv.
According to the newspaper, some European politicians want all funds to be accessible to Ukraine, not just the interest income. However, economists warn of the destructive consequences of such a step for the financial system.
The European Union, G7 countries, and Australia, after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, froze about 280 billion dollars of Russian state assets. In May 2024, the EU approved the use of income from frozen assets to aid Ukraine. Over the past year, Kyiv received 3 billion euros.
At the same time, Ukraine has long been insisting on the confiscation of Russian assets as compensation for the damage caused by the full-scale invasion. Meanwhile, not all in the European Union support such a decision. As early as March, Deutsche Welle reported that the EU would not confiscate frozen Russian assets due to opposition from several countries.
It is known that in Europe, the biggest opponents of confiscating Russian assets are Belgium, France, Germany, and Italy. They are opposed by Poland, the Baltic countries, Scandinavia, and several Central European states. They believe that assets should be confiscated and fully transferred to Ukraine.
