The ‘Ukrainian Spelling’ standard has come into force in Ukraine

The Cabinet of Ministers has updated Ukrainian spelling by approving a new standard for the official language, which has already come into force. From now on, this text is the sole official version and must be used in all areas of public life.

This was announced by the National Commission on State Language Standards.

At the same time, on 28 March 2026, the state language standard ‘Ukrainian Spelling’, approved by Decision No. 47 of the National Commission on State Language Standards dated 1 March 2026, came into force. Its text has been published on the Commission’s official website.

It is noted that the new standard is mandatory for use throughout Ukraine in accordance with the law on the state language. Its scope extends, in particular, to legislation, official document circulation, translations, and educational and scientific texts.

However, the spelling rules themselves have not been changed – the document reproduces the 2019 edition.

The changes made are of an editorial and technical nature:

  • the structure of the document as a regulatory act has been standardised;
  • technical errors have been corrected;
  • examples relating to the aggressor state and its allies have been removed;
  • the wording of certain rules has been clarified without altering their meaning;
  • examples have been added and a section entitled ‘The Ukrainian Alphabet’ has been introduced.

The spelling guidelines were prepared by a working group comprising leading scholars from relevant institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and universities.

The commission notes that work on refining the spelling rules will continue, in particular to resolve contentious issues and further develop linguistic norms.
