Ukraine has received 1,000 bodies of the deceased, which, according to the Russian side, belong to Ukrainian defenders. Identification and forensic medical examination procedures have begun.

On Thursday, 29 January, 1,000 bodies and remains of the deceased, which, according to the Russian side, belong to Ukrainian defenders, were returned to Ukraine as part of repatriation measures. This was reported by the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

Currently, law enforcement investigators, together with representatives of expert institutions, are taking all necessary measures to identify the repatriated deceased. This involves establishing their identities, causes of death, and further processing of the relevant documentation.

The repatriation measures were made possible thanks to the joint efforts of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, the Joint Centre at the Security Service of Ukraine, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Office of the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, the Secretariat of the Commissioner for Persons Missing under Special Circumstances, the State Emergency Service and other structures in the security and defence sector.

The headquarters separately thanked the International Committee of the Red Cross for its assistance in the repatriation process. They also noted the work of the civil-military cooperation units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which ensure the transportation of bodies to specialised state institutions and their transfer to representatives of law enforcement agencies and forensic medical experts of the Ministry of Health.
