Russian President Vladimir Putin secretly sent submarines to target the UK’s cables and pipelines, but the operation failed.

This was stated by Defence Secretary John Gile at a press conference in Downing Street, according to Sky News.

He says that as part of Russian operations in the North Atlantic near the UK, Russia has stepped up its activity by deploying an Akula-class submarine, as well as two submarines from the Directorate of Deep-Sea Research.

The UK, together with its allies, notably Norway, has deployed forces to ensure round-the-clock surveillance of Russian vessels. Since then, says Gilley, they have left British waters, and “the covert operation has been exposed”.

“We can see you, we can see your activities regarding our cables and pipelines,” the British minister told Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

According to him, “any attempt” to damage British cables or pipelines would be unacceptable and would have “serious consequences”.
