To improve the financial support provided to Ukrainian military personnel, three key conditions need to be met, one of which depends on international partners.

This was stated by the Military Ombudsman, Olga Reshetilova, in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.

“The issue of military pay can be resolved in several ways. The first is for our European partners to recognise that the Ukrainian army is a European army and that it defends the European border,” Reshetilova noted.

According to her, the second condition is the optimisation of internal processes, and the third is society’s willingness to sacrifice its social benefits for the sake of defending the state and supporting military personnel.

"If we resolve these three main issues, we will be ready to review the pay of military personnel. This won’t happen quickly. As someone who came from civil society, I imagined that everything could be resolved quickly," added the military ombudsman.

She also emphasised that when there are budgetary difficulties, one must look towards optimisation.

"We all need to understand that in the fifth year of a full-scale war, we have to give something up, but we must never give up on our own troops," Reshetilova stressed.

New guarantees for military personnel: what is known

Recently, a number of decisions have been adopted in Ukraine regarding the social protection of military personnel and their families. In particular, the Verkhovna Rada has introduced amendments to legislation governing employment, leave and pay during martial law.

New payments for health damage have also been introduced for certain categories of defenders.

Furthermore, the government has expanded the list of benefits, under which the families of servicemen missing in action are now also entitled to receive appropriate financial support.
