A Tesla Model 3 owner has calculated the costs over four and a half years of ownership
YouTuber Nigel, who runs a channel with his wife Jen, has published a video detailing the running costs of a Tesla Model 3. The car has covered over 30,000 miles during this time.
According to him, the basic limited warranty was in effect for the first four years, so there were no maintenance costs. The car also comes with an eight-year or 100,000-mile warranty on the battery and powertrain.
Among the costs, he mentioned a £420 repair to the touchscreen, as well as the replacement of the air filter and windscreen wipers. New tyres after 25,000 miles cost £650. Two MOT tests cost £110, and road tax amounted to £195.
Insurance costs over five years amounted to £2,091. Total expenditure over four years was approximately $4,592.
Taking into account free charging, home charging and paid charging points, £1,137 was spent on charging the car over four years.
Nigel also compared these costs with a petrol car, calculating them based on fuel consumption of 45, 40 and 35 miles per gallon. According to his calculations, petrol costs over four years would have been $5,815, $6,543 and $7,478 respectively.
He said that using the Tesla Model 3 had saved him a significant amount of money compared to a petrol car. He noted that this challenges the common perception that electric cars can be more expensive to run.
The Tesla Model 3 was unveiled in 2016 at an event in Hawthorne, California. Orders opened on the same day, and 180,000 reservations were placed within 24 hours. In July 2017, the first production car rolled off the assembly line, after which deliveries to customers began.
