This is reported by UNIAN.
Who is commemorated on 17 May
The Apostle Andronicus lived in the 1st century and was one of the seventy apostles of Christ. He preached Christianity among the pagans, particularly in the region of Pannonia. He was accompanied in his preaching by Saint Junia, whom church tradition refers to as his companion and assistant. According to legend, a church was later built in Constantinople on the site where their relics were found. Believers who follow the Julian calendar honour the martyr Pelagia on this day.
Folk omens and taboos of the day
In folk tradition, Saint Andronicus was considered the patron saint of rain. That is why people prayed to him during droughts and asked for a good harvest. 17 May is considered a favourable day for working in the vegetable garden. Farmers would earth up potatoes and plant cabbages, tomatoes and peppers. The traditional dish of the day was pies with potatoes and onions. People believed that these brought prosperity and a good harvest. At the same time, on this day, it was advised to avoid noisy feasts, long journeys and hasty decisions. People also avoided going into the woods due to the activity of snakes in May.
Among the weather omens:
- a north wind foretells a cool summer;
- a southerly wind — hot weather;
- if the day is sunny and rainless, autumn may come early.
According to folk observations, whatever the weather is like on 17 May, that is what summer is expected to be like.
