What holidays are celebrated on 16 May

On the third Saturday in May, Ukraine traditionally celebrates Science Day. The holiday is dedicated to scientists, lecturers, researchers and students of scientific disciplines. On this day, themed conferences, public lectures and award ceremonies for representatives of the scientific community are held. Also on 16 May, Nordic Walking Day is celebrated worldwide. This form of physical activity involves walking with special poles and is considered suitable for people of all ages. Its popularity is attributed to the moderate strain on the joints and its benefits for the muscles and cardiovascular system. Other international dates include Orienteering Day, Restaurant Day, Biographer’s Day, Coeliac Awareness Day and Whisky Day.

Church holidays and folk traditions

According to the new church calendar, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine honours Saint Theodore the Sanctified and Bishop Alexander of Jerusalem on 16 May. In folk beliefs, this day was associated with the coming harvest and the weather. Our ancestors kept a close watch on nature and believed that May rain promised a good harvest.

Among the signs of this day:

  • if pear and rosehip trees have blossomed, it is time to plant carrots;
  • water lilies on the rivers herald an early summer;
  • loud thunder during a storm — clear weather ahead;
  • intense heat on 16 May — a sign of a hot June.

At the same time, the day was considered difficult in folk tradition. People were advised to avoid arguments, not to work with sharp objects and not to overindulge in alcohol.
