YouTube secretly "paints" users on videos using AI
This is mentioned in the BBC article.
Over the past few months, YouTube has been experimentally applying AI to process Shorts videos: changing sharpness, highlighting details on clothing and skin, and sometimes even deforming ears. The changes are almost imperceptible without comparison, but some creators feel that the content appears "artificial," undermining viewers' trust.
Bloggers confirm: their videos were processed without prior notice. They complain that the videos start to look distorted by AI and distort the creator's representation online.
Undoubtedly, modern smartphones have built-in AI features that can improve image and video quality. However, according to Samuel Wulli, a professor of disinformation research at the University of Pittsburgh (USA), this is a completely different matter.
«You can decide for yourself what you want your phone to do and whether to enable certain features. In this case, we are dealing with a company that manipulates content from leading users, which is then spread to the public without the consent of the authors of these videos».
YouTube has officially confirmed that processing is applied to a limited number of Shorts using traditional machine learning to improve clarity and reduce noise. However, the company did not respond to whether users will have a choice regarding these changes.
