Zelensky stated that Belarus has become a tool for Russia to blackmail Europe
During his speech in Vilnius on 25 January on the anniversary of the January Uprising, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called Belarus a springboard for Russia's war against Ukraine and a tool for blackmailing Europe and the world, DW reports.
The head of state stressed that every delay has its price. According to him, Belarus is still forced to exist as a Russian governorate, and the Belarusian people have yet to achieve true independence and security. Zelensky noted that, unfortunately, even the pet of self-proclaimed ruler Alexander Lukashenko has more rights than the country's citizens.
The president is convinced that Europe missed its chance in 2020 when it failed to provide sufficient support for the democratic aspirations of the Belarusian people. As a result, he said, Belarus has become even more dependent on Moscow, which has made the situation more dangerous and costly for all countries in the region.
Zelensky reminded that Russia is using Belarusian territory to attack Ukraine. From there, operators of Shahed-type jet drones operate and communications for strikes are provided. In addition, according to the president, Belarus has been turned into a testing ground for blackmailing Europe with so-called Oreshniki. Its industry works for the Russian war, and its trade channels help the Kremlin circumvent sanctions and obtain components for weapons.
The president stressed that it is critically important for Europe not to waste time and not to abandon any people who strive for freedom. He called for daily work to strengthen Europe as an area of security and unity.
Separately, Zelenskyy addressed the people of Belarus, calling them a European people who will ultimately be part of a free, peaceful and strong Europe. He thanked the Belarusian volunteers who are currently fighting in Ukraine for the freedom and independence of both countries.
