Zelenskyy met with Tsikhanouskaya in Kyiv and expressed his support for Belarus’s independence
This was reported by Volodymyr Zelenskyy himself.
On Tuesday, 26 May, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and her team during an international summit in Kyiv.
According to Zelenskyy, representatives from 24 countries, mainly European states, are taking part in the summit.
The President noted that all of Ukraine’s neighbours are represented at the meeting, including Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Moldova, Romania and Belarus.
Support for the Belarusian people
During the meeting, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine, together with its partners, supports the Belarusian people’s desire to rid themselves of Russian interference.
He also emphasised that Russia is attempting to drag Belarus even further into the war against Ukraine.
“We all support the Belarusian people’s desire to rid themselves of Russian interference and know that Russia is currently trying to drag Belarus even further into this war against Ukraine. And we appreciate every show of support from Belarusians for a free Ukraine, and we know that the day will come when our countries will once again enjoy good-neighbourly relations based on the genuine independence of both Ukraine and Belarus from Moscow,” Zelenskyy said.
The President also emphasised that Ukraine has never posed a threat to Belarus.
He thanked the Belarusians who are supporting Ukraine during the war.
Tikhanovskaya’s visit to Ukraine
It was previously reported that on 25 May, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya arrived in Kyiv on her first official visit to Ukraine at the invitation of Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
In the capital, she visited the grave of Belarusian volunteer Maria Zaitseva, who died defending Ukraine.
Tikhanovskaya described this gesture as a symbol of Ukrainian-Belarusian solidarity and the shared struggle for freedom.
Honouring the fallen
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga also paid tribute in Kyiv to the fallen Ukrainian soldiers and Belarusian volunteers.
They laid flowers at the memorial to the fallen defenders.
Tikhanovskaya stated that over 80 Belarusians had given their lives for Ukraine.
She also noted that Ukraine’s victory would pave the way for Belarus’s freedom.
