59% of Germans are not willing to defend the country with weapons in hand
The relevant data from a sociological survey is published by The Telegraph.
According to the survey for RND, only 16% of German citizens are "definitely" willing to take up arms in case of an attack, another 22% would probably do so. The remaining 59% stated that they are "probably" or "definitely" not going to defend the country.
As noted by The Telegraph, these figures dealt a blow to the Ministry of Defense's plans to increase the army size from 182 thousand to 260 thousand personnel by 2035 amid reforms and rising military expenditures due to the threat from the RF.
