A 30-hryvnia metro fare in Kyiv could cost a family nearly 35,000 hryvnias a year
This was stated by Andriy Vitrenko, a member of the Kyiv City Council from the “Servant of the People” faction and chair of the Budget Committee.
How much a family could lose
An increase in the cost of a single journey on the Kyiv Metro to 30 UAH could result in additional expenses of almost 35,000 UAH per year for an average family of three.
These calculations were provided by Kyiv City Council member Andriy Vitrenko.
According to his calculations, a family of three makes an average of two journeys a day for 22 days a month.
At the current fare of 8 UAH, these costs amount to 1,056 UAH per month.
If the fare is increased to 30 UAH, monthly costs will rise to 3,960 UAH.
The difference would be 2,904 UAH per month or 34,848 UAH per year.
What the new fare means for Kyiv residents
Vitrenko stated that for many families, this amount could be comparable to the cost of utilities, children’s clubs, medicines or part of their rent.
“For many families, this means: utility bills, children’s clubs, medicines, and part of their rent,” the MP noted.
According to him, the European approach to public transport is not just about high fares.
It also involves new transport, passenger comfort and substantial subsidies.
What the MP proposes
Vitrenko believes that before raising fares, the city authorities should conduct an audit of “Kyivpastrans” and the “Kyiv Metro”.
He also believes that a reform of the capital’s transport network is needed.
What the Kyiv authorities are planning
According to available information, the Kyiv city authorities plan to increase the cost of a single journey on public transport from 15 July.
This applies to the metro, trams, trolleybuses and buses.
The fare could rise almost fourfold – from 8 to 30 UAH.
The network has also calculated that a monthly travel pass in Kyiv, which could cost 4,875 UAH, will be more expensive than travel passes in Warsaw and Vienna.
