A court in Mykolaiv has remanded the Nissan driver in custody in connection with a road traffic accident that left 12 people dead
On 7 July, an investigating judge at the Central District Court of Mykolaiv considered a motion from the Mykolaiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office regarding the imposition of a pre-trial measure on a 45-year-old driver of a Nissan Murano, who is suspected of causing a fatal road traffic accident.
Following the hearing, the court granted the prosecution’s application and ordered the suspect to be remanded in custody for a period of 60 days without the right to bail.
During the court hearing, the defence requested that the suspect be placed under round-the-clock house arrest. In the event that remand in custody was ordered, the defence also requested that the amount of bail be set. The court did not grant this request.
According to the investigation, on 4 July, on the Odessa–Melitopol–Novoazovsk motorway, the driver of a Nissan Murano veered into the oncoming lane and caused an accident. As a result, the driver of a Mercedes-Benz passenger minibus veered onto the hard shoulder, lost control, after which the vehicle overturned, veered into the oncoming lane and collided with a Volvo lorry.
Twelve people were killed in the accident, and a further six were injured, including a 15-year-old girl.
For the alleged offence, the suspect faces up to ten years’ imprisonment and a driving ban of up to three years.
