Two suspects have been arrested in Ukraine in connection with the murder of a woman wanted by Interpol in connection with an attempted murder in Monaco
The National Police of Ukraine, the Security Service of Ukraine, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and the Office of the Prosecutor General have reported the arrest of two individuals on suspicion of the murder of Ukrainian citizen Anastasia Berezovska.
According to law enforcement authorities, Berezovska was wanted by the law enforcement agencies of the Principality of Monaco on suspicion of attempting to murder a family within the principality. Three people, including a child, were injured as a result of this attack.
A pre-trial investigation into this incident was launched in Ukraine on 1 July 2026. According to the investigation, Berezovska arrived in Ukraine on the same day. Following investigative and operational measures, the police established her circle of contacts and her movements.
The investigation established that, upon her return, she had been in contact with her family and two men. One of them is a former law enforcement officer, whilst the other is a serving officer with the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.
Law enforcement officials note that both men had on several occasions transferred funds to Berezovska’s bank accounts and crypto wallets, and were therefore investigated for possible involvement in the attempted murder in Monaco.
During urgent investigative measures, according to law enforcement officials, the serving officer of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence confessed to the murder of Berezovskaya, which, he claimed, he had committed together with the other suspect. He also stated that he had not informed his superiors about his contacts with Berezovskaya, the money transfers or other actions, and had acted on his own initiative.
During a search of the former law enforcement officer’s home, the police discovered a basement room resembling a torture chamber.
Both men were arrested on suspicion of murder committed as part of a premeditated conspiracy by a group of individuals. Based on the testimony of one of the suspects, a forensic reconstruction was carried out, during which law enforcement officers discovered the body of Anastasia Berezovskaya with gunshot wounds to the head and spent bullet casings.
A notice of suspicion is currently being prepared. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
All information available to the Ukrainian law enforcement agencies has been passed on to the investigating authorities of the Principality of Monaco. The Office of the Prosecutor General and the National Police of Ukraine are cooperating with the principality’s law enforcement agencies.
Law enforcement agencies are also identifying those who ordered the attack and others who may have been involved in the attempted murder of the family in Monaco.
The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by the National Police of Ukraine, with operational support from the SBU’s counter-intelligence unit and the personal assistance of Oleg Ivashchenko, Head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.
