A fire is still raging at the oil refinery in Slavyansk-on-Kuban following a drone attack
In Slavyansk-on-Kuban, efforts are continuing to bring a fire under control at an oil refinery that was attacked by drones.
According to local authorities, the area affected by the fire exceeded 20,000 square metres the day before. Two fire engines have been deployed to tackle the blaze, reports TMT.
Local authorities have reported that Rospotrebnadzor is monitoring water and air quality across the entire municipality. Three temporary accommodation centres and additional hospital beds have also been prepared for residents.
On the evening of 29 June, it emerged that permissible levels of soot in the air had been exceeded due to the fire at the oil refinery. Pollution was recorded in the area of the ‘Zarya’ gardeners’ association. The relevant information was forwarded to Rospotrebnadzor for further action.
The Sloviansk oil refinery came under attack from drones on the night of 28 June. Thick black smoke rose from the site, eventually blanketing the city. According to reports, the plume of smoke stretched for tens of kilometres and was visible from space.
Residents of the city complained of a strong smell of burning. The authorities recommended temporarily leaving the area, whilst those unable to do so were advised to stay at home, keep their windows closed, rinse their airways with a saline solution and wear face masks when outdoors.
The affected oil refinery is owned by the company ‘Slavyansk ECO’. The plant has a capacity of 5.2 million tonnes of crude oil per year. It accounts for around 9 per cent of oil refining in the Southern Federal District of the Russian Federation.
