The Holosiivskyi District Court in Kyiv has found a 35-year-old local woman guilty of setting fire to the entrance hall door of a block of flats. She was sentenced to five years and one month’s imprisonment for the offence

This was reported by the Kyiv police.

Why did a woman set fire to the door of a block of flats?

The incident took place in March this year. After extinguishing the fire, the fire service informed the police that the blaze may have been started deliberately.

During their investigation, the police discovered that shortly before the fire, an argument had broken out between the woman and her partner. According to the investigation, following the argument, the woman decided to take revenge: she doused the lower part of the entrance hall door with a flammable liquid, set it alight and fled.

Residents of the building told the police that before the fire broke out, they had heard an argument and loud banging on the door, and within a few minutes the entrance hall began to fill with smoke.

What sentence did the court impose?

The police arrested the woman near her home. During the investigation, it also emerged that at the time of the arson, she was on probation for a previous theft offence.

Investigators informed her that she was suspected of intentionally damaging another person’s property by arson. The court sentenced her to three years’ imprisonment. However, taking into account the unserved portion of her previous sentence, the final sentence amounted to five years and one month’s imprisonment.
