An explosion at a mine in China has claimed the lives of at least 90 people
CNN reports
There were nearly 250 miners underground
The explosion occurred on Friday at 19:30 local time at a mine operated by the Shanxi Tongzhou Group Liushenyu Coal Industry. At the time of the accident, 247 workers were underground. According to the state news agency Xinhua, by Saturday morning rescuers had managed to evacuate at least 201 people. However, 90 people were killed, and a further nine are still missing. Between 400 and 500 specialists have been deployed to the search and rescue operation. Provincial leaders have also arrived at the scene of the tragedy.
Xi Jinping calls for an investigation into the causes of the accident
Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy and that those responsible be held accountable in accordance with the law. The causes of the explosion are currently being established.
Shanxi Province is China’s main coal-producing region and accounts for over a quarter of the country’s total coal output. Despite stricter safety requirements, the industry remains one of the most dangerous. As a reminder, in 2023, 53 people died as a result of a mine collapse in Inner Mongolia.
